Mountain Laurel Quilters

March 8th through April l8th

This exhibit features a variety of quilts, wall hangings, and framed pieces by members of the Mountain Laurel Quilters. This guild was started in 2000 and is now preparing for its third biennial show - Quilt Festival III - which will be April 25 and 27th at Sarah Noble School in New Milford, Ct.

The exhibit features a variety of quilting techniques, such as a piecing, applique, embroidery, stenciling and hand and machine quilting. There is a range of traditional to contemporary styes showing the individual interpretation of a design by the quilter.

The Mountain Laurel quiliters meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the Richmond Center on Main Street in New Milford and is composed of beginning and experienced quilters who enjoy sharing, learning and donating back to area communities with charitable projects.

Mary Shanley Gates

January 18th through February 28th, 2009

Mary Shanley Gates has spent most of her life in Connecticut, except for two and a half years as a VISTA volunteer in Montana. She worked in the Brookfield school system for thirty two years as a teacher and curriculum coordinator. She co-authored a teacher resource book, Living with the Land, published in 1998. With her husband, Timothy, she has been a New Milford resident for more than thirty years. She recently published a 2009 calendar, Lighthouse Landscapes, from her original paintings.

The strong use of color can be seen in Mary’s work. Two styles of painting that she has always been drawn to are Impressionism and primitive Americana. Some of her favorite artists are Van Gogh, Monet, Grandma Moses, and Charles Wysocki. She is most satisfied when her work makes viewers smile.

Mary works primarily in acrylics, but has used other media such as oils, pastels, water colors, and gouache. Some of her work is currently displayed at Building Block Art Supply and Gallery in Ridgefield, CT.

Art is my Church, Reiki is my Prayer

Lori's work is an imitation of her life, an ongoing collage, deep with excitement and spiritual mysteries. As a Reiki and Shamballa Master and therapeutic touch practitioner there is always the desire to explore the other side of matter and to express what the artist inside sees.


‘Using the right side of my brain, as an artist for 35 years, I speak to the left on fewer occasions now. Pictures form my logic, numbers become elements for collages and philosophical thoughts turn into hues of the palette. Much of my art is formed by dreams and executed by intuition. Angel photography dominates my mixed media engravings on metal but other techniques and images are filtering in when I least expect them.’
Photography, paint and unusual materials comprise the palette of Lori’s art. She has developed her style in manipulated Polaroid image transfers, emulsion transfers engraved photo transfers on metal and mixed media collage.

Lori is a former teacher and graduate of Southern Conn. St. University
Further studies at Savannah College of Art and Design, Bennington College, and Omega Institute.
Solo exhibits in Connecticut include: The UCONN Library, Norfolk Artisan's Gallery, Atelier Gallery in New Milford, Church House Concerts, Haddam, the Gathering Place, Hartford, and New Milford, Torrington, and Waterbury Hospitals, St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury and numerous libraries including the Oliver Wolcott Library in Litchfield and the Hunt Library in Falls Village.
Lori’s one-woman shows in other states include the Santarella Museum in Tyringham, MA, and the Smith Gallery in Manchester, VT.

She was Artist in residence at Santarella Museum in Tyringham, MA.
Lori was featured in magazines including the Crafts Report , Artitude, Artella and on the covers of Reiki One and The Door Opener.

Laurie Quigley Sweet is an illustrator and
decorative artist, of seed time studio,
and art teacher, at Wamogo High School.
Every day is the theme of her art, in which
she explores multiple mediums such as lucite
shadow boxes, oils or acrylics on wood and
canvas, decorative boxes, and small
postcards. Mrs. sweet has been published in Gourmet, with Random House and Mcdonalds. This autumn she will pursue a Masters of Arts in Holistic Thinking. Laurie resides in Goshen with her husband, Matthew
and sons, Patrick and Christian.

I am an award winning self-taught nature photographerwith over 10 years experience in the field. My file incluces Birds, Mammals, Flowers and Landscapes from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. After spending 20 years in the information technology field, I am using my knowledge of computer technology to produce fine images from film and digital cameras. I have developed an extensive knowledge of Color Management technology enabiling me to produce fine art images. I control the complete process from capturing the image to producing the print. The end result is my vision that began with the click of the camera shutter.


Color has such an incredible effect on human beings. Bright colors in images can be so uplifiting and can elevate your mood by just dazing off into them. The vibrant colors found in nature are such an intoxicating sensation to witness. It' the colors, the contrast and how light is playing on the scene and what draws me in and inspires me to capture an image in nature.


My equipment includes professional SLR camera bodies including the Canon EOS3 film body. the EOS 20D digital body with an assortment of Canon lenses. My favorite films are Fuji Velvia and Provia 100 F, both for there rich color palette and fine grain though the majority of my shooting today is digital capture.

The Housatonic Art League (or H.A.L.) is a non-profit art organization serving the Greater New Milford area as well as many other western Connecticut towns.

Organized in 1971 by a small group of professional and semi-professional artists, HAL has grown over the last 30 years to become a multi-faceted organization. Amateurs, students, Sunday painters, emerging artists and professionals are all equally welcome as members. HAL provides an arena in which artists and craftsmen can socialize, exchange ideas, meet new friends and learn new skills that may enhance their lives and careers.

HAL awards a scholarship annually to an area high school senior winner of a portfolio competition, and provides qualified art show judges free of charge on a regular basis to community organizations.
HAL also sponsors art exhibits for local banks, restaurants, and businesses, monthly art demos ("An Evening with the Masters"), and art classes taught at reasonable rates to area residents.
